WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?

Varicose veins, also known as varices, are pathologically enlarged veins that most commonly occur in the legs. They are located close to the surface of the skin and appear as bluish, swollen, usually knot-like veins that are filled with blood and unnaturally twisted. These congested blood vessels may wind across the leg as individual protruding veins or form web-like networks. However, varicose veins are not limited to the legs – they can also occur in the esophagus or, during pregnancy, on the labia. Varicose veins are a clear sign of venous weakness and should always be evaluated and, if necessary, treated by a phlebologist. Varicose veins can be divided into primary and secondary varices. Primary varices, which account for around 95% of all cases, include all cases with a non-specific cause. Important risk factors include the connective tissue weakness already mentioned, excess weight, lack of exercise, and generally prolonged standing or sitting without sufficient variation, as well as hormonal changes due to pregnancy or the use of birth control pills, and smoking. If varicose veins develop as a result of deep vein thrombosis, they are referred to as secondary varices.

SYMPTOMS OF VARICOSE VEINS

In some cases, varicose veins may occur without pain. However, many patients find their clearly visible appearance very disturbing from an aesthetic point of view. Nevertheless, the development of unattractive, protruding blue varicose veins is sooner or later often accompanied by health problems.

At night, affected patients often suffer from calf cramps, which are usually associated with severe pain. Poor blood circulation also means that the skin in these areas is not supplied with sufficient nutrients. This may become noticeable through unpleasant itching in the affected area.
Depending on the severity of the venous condition, painful inflammation of the veins may also occur. Due to the poor supply of nutrients and oxygen to the tissue and skin, dark discoloration may develop, mainly around the ankle and lower leg. In the worst case, this can lead to a lower leg ulcer, commonly known as an “open leg.” This condition is very painful, and the healing process can take many years.
